Location: The forest spans 163,037 acres between Huntsville, Conroe, Cleveland, and Richards, Texas, covering parts of Montgomery, Walker, and San Jacinto counties.
Highlights:
Lone Star Hiking Trail: At 96 miles, it's the longest continuous hiking trail in Texas, offering hikers a chance to explore the forest's diverse ecosystems.
Multiple-Use Trails: The forest boasts 85 miles of trails designated for hiking, biking, horseback riding, and off-highway vehicles (OHVs).
Recreational Areas: Several developed areas provide amenities for camping, picnicking, boating, and fishing.
Sam Houston National Forest offers several campgrounds suitable for RV travelers:
1. Cagle Recreation Area
Location: Situated along the shoreline of Lake Conroe on the west fork of the San Jacinto River.
Amenities: The campground features 48 sites with full hookups (water, electricity, and sewer), hot showers, restrooms, a boat ramp, hiking and biking trails, and a picnic area overlooking Lake Conroe.
Reservations: Sites are available on a first-come, first-served basis.
2. Double Lake Recreation Area
Location: Located near Coldspring, Texas, surrounding a 24-acre lake.
Amenities: The area offers family camping units, group camping, picnicking units, a swimming area with a beach, and a concession stand with bathhouse. Some sites have water, sewer, and electrical hookups. Canoe and paddleboat rentals are available, and the lake is stocked with bass, bream, and catfish.
Reservations: Facilities are available by reservation or on a first-come, first-served basis if not previously reserved.
